Costumes:
If your actor is an Indian, there are a few things you can do to help out the hard working costume committee.

• Label your child’s moccasins. They were labeled last night, however, some kids had to switch sizes so they may no longer have the correct name on them.

• 
  

• With the hard dancing the actors are dong, some of the medal Conchos on the costumes are falling off. If you can, please reinforce them prior to the show.

Pizza Night Fundraiser
On Saturday, May 3, following the 2pm show, we invite you to Seniore’s Pizza at 373 Main Street in Redwood City. They are offering e.T.c. 15% of what is spent that evening. So I hope everyone is gearing up for a busy but exciting week. We know it was a long day Sunday, but the staff got a lot accomplished and we are ready to do a full dress rehearsal tonight – which is very exciting! If you do not have your costume for dress rehearsal tonight – not to worry! The costume committee is hard at work and will have your costume ready soon. If you do not have a costume yet, wear regular clothes tonight.
 
On a side note – I want all the parents to know that the kids were EXTREMELY well behaved on Sunday. For it being a long day, they were attentive, respectful of the theater and others, and quiet when they needed to be. The staff was very proud of them and I wanted to be sure the parents knew.
 
Below you will find costume info regarding shoes and make up as well as the concession stand donation list.  Your family name will have an item listed next to it. Please bring that item to the concession stand area on the day you are assigned. The concession stand chairperson will check you off. Each item will be sold for $1.
 
Costume Info 
Most costumes were distributed on Sunday. The only things participants need to provide is their shoes an socks. I am sorry for the late notice on the shoes. Please see the guidelines below.

Make Up
Make up for all characters should look natural. See the general tips below.
For Lost Boys,  brown smudges can be added to give the appearance of dirty faces.
For Pirates, some smudges can be added or “five o’clock shadow”. Indians can wear war paint.
 
General Make-up Tips
Stage makeup is very tricky for most people. It  layers thick (and always seems TOO thick when it’s going on), and it looks very garish. Many people actually don’t put it on thick enough. Even if it looks very dark while it’s being done, it still may fade under the bright stage lights. Tips for colors and application are below. These tips were written up specifically for stage makeup, but if you do not want to purchase stage make up you can use regular street makeup if you wish.
 
Foundation goes on first. It’s very thick, heavy cream and should be a little bit darker than skin tone. Two colors can be blended (the lighter one going on first) if there’s no color that’s appropriate. Darker (but not excessively dark) is always better. Start the foundation at the forehead and blend up to the hairline. Then cover the rest of the face, including ears, eyelids, and the neck. The neck is necessary so it doesn’t look like a mask. On guys, the entire neck (back too) is sometimes done, but this is messy. After the general foundation, a lighter color goes over the shadows under the nose and on the chin.
 
After all of the foundation is complete, the blush is done. Choose a rosy color (paler for men) and streak it over the cheekbone. Blend down and up, about halfway down the cheek. On men, it should look naturally rosy, while on women it should be dark enough that it will be seen on the stage as makeup. The blush is also (very slightly) blended over the nose and onto the forehead. The blush will almost always be darker on women than one thinks at first. This must be visible to the audience from under the hot stage lights.
 
Next is the eye makeup, which is the most complicated part. First a very white ‘highlighter’ is used along the brow bone (right underneath the eyebrow) and under the eye. This should be well blended so there are no white streaks, but the area is lightened. Next, a color that’s a little darker than skin tone is brushed over the eye, just above the eyelid but below the brow bone. This is also blended beneath the eye. Over this, an even darker color is put along the top of the eyelid and is blended downwards. It also acts as an eyeliner, but only on the top of the eye. On men, this may be enough for eyeliner. Over this, for women, find an even darker, rosier color that looks more like normal eye shadow. Put this on as one might for everyday makeup, but make it look more obvious. Blend the color a little above the eyebrow so that it’s visible. Men may not need this; if they do, choose a less rosy color. After color is on, line the eyes with dark brown or a similar color. Black should never be used unless the character is very dramatic and needs wild makeup. Last, mascara is put on the top lashes. Try putting the wand into the actor’s lashes and having him or her blink – this makes errors less likely.

TECH WEEK/DRESS REHERSAL
This week begins Tech Week. This is that intense week I told you all about at the parent meeting during auditions. Can you believe it is here!
 
What is tech week you might ask….
 
Well Tech Week is the week where the actors and staff move into the theater and take what they learned at Parkside for the past 9 weeks and bring it to the stage to get ready for opening night. This is a very exciting time but a very busy and hectic time. Time at the theater begins on Sunday with a safety tour of the theater. The staff will teach the kids theater etiquette and rules that they will need to abide by during the show run. The rules are in place mainly for the safety of the actors, stage crew and volunteers.
 
Once the safety talk is done and the actors begin to run through the show, the actors will be situated back stage in the “green room”. This show, we will be using the hallway back stage with the 5 dressing rooms and rest rooms, as well as half the “scene shop”. This is providing us with lots more room for our actors to be comfortable and quiet while waiting to go on stage. (During Narnia we only had the hallway and dressing room area – the scene shop space is a welcome area!)
 
As you know already or may have heard from other parents, tech week requires the actors to sit around – A LOT. There are many tech pieces that need to be worked out with the director, stage manager, choreographer, music director and orchestra, vocal director, lighting and sound designer, set designer, set crew, stage crew and fly mommies and daddies (did I leave anyone out?) But the cast must be there to work their scenes when it is time to be on stage, so it is vital the actors are there the whole day.
 
This presents the issue of “how do we keep the kids quiet, attentive, active but not too active, and interested?” Good question! The actors should bring activities to keep them busy. One thing I do is ask my daughter’s teacher for her homework for all next week and she works on that during the down time. I have also seen kids playing cards, knitting, playing travel board games, reading books, doing crossword puzzles, coloring, drawing…you name it. If it is a quiet activity, it is a good idea to bring it! Be sure anything your child brings is clearly labeled so if it is misplaced (come on – I’m just being realistic) it is easy to get it back to the owner.
 
On our long Sunday call, staff and chaperone volunteers will do our best to give the kids some time to get outside and run off some of their energy. We all know it is hard to keep kids quiet when there are 99 of them, but we will get them some time to get fresh air and stretch their legs.
 
Remember to send your child with a lunch and snack on Sunday. They are not allowed to eat in the theater or back stage, but we will provide them time to have lunch and snack.
 
Hair & Make Up
If you remember, in the parent meeting, we ask that the actors come in their costume with their hair and make up done and ready to go. It is important that this happen because our call time is so short, we will need all the time we can get for all the technical warm ups. Hair and make up will not be permitted to be done at the theater. Actors should take their costume home each evening. It is best to have a labeled laundry basket they can use to bring their costumes back and forth in after every show. Be sure that their costume is also clearly labeled.
 
STAGE CREW
Set construction is finished and now, Stage Crew, it is your time to shine! Saturday, April 26 is "load in". That means everyone needs to meet at the warehouse at 8:30am to load the sets into the UHAUL and bring them from the warehouse to the theater and unload them into the theater. Even if you are not part of stage crew, we can still use your help to load the sets! We need as many hands and trucks as we can get! Once at the theater, it is time to put the nursery, Neverland and the Jolly Roger together. Come ready to transform the stage!

Tickets are still on sale through the website and the ticket order form. We want to hit our goal of 4000 tickets. We are over a quarter of the way there so sell sell sell to help the cast reach the goal. Tell everyone you know! We want to fill those seats for the actors. The actors get their energy from knowing that they have support in the audience and they adore hearing the laughter from their fans in the audience. Actor Bios
I am still missing some actors bios and head shots. Please email the bios to neverlandnews08@yahoo.com. Bring your black and white 4X6 photo to rehearsal on Saturday. In the lobby of our theater, “head shot” photos of each actor will be displayed. Please type up and email a short paragraph to go along with your picture.  Tell about your past theater experience, school interests, or anything else you would like to tell members of the audience about yourself. “Third person” style is the standard form (use “he or she”, NOT “I or me”).  Please do not include school names. Please keep length reasonable as the headshot also needs to fit on the page.  If the bio is too long it will be edited or text size will be reduced.
 
Cast Party
Cast party flyers were in the folders last weekend. The cast party committee has planned a great party for the cast and families to celebrate at the closing of the show. Reservations can be made by turning in the order form to the “Cast Party” folder at rehearsal. The cast party will be held at the Canada Cafeteria at the conclusion of strike (breaking down the stage sets and cleaning up the theater & greenrooms). Families are invited to attend! Please bring your form and payment so the cast party committee knows how many to plan for!
 
Notes
Now that we are in full swing of run through with the cast, the staff will begin making “notes” for the actors. The notes will be emailed along with the Neverland News. They will also be posted on the website and posted at rehearsal. Please be sure your actor reviews the notes prior to the next rehearsal. These notes will give the actors ideas of how to better play their role, be seen on stage, project their lines or songs and be their character. This is the “educational” part of the Educational Theater Company…

Monday is the last day to sell tickets to qualify for the grand prize of the flying session! Ticket orders will be counted up until 12 noon on Monday 4/21, then the winner of the fly session will be announced at rehearsal on Monday night! So don’t forget to sell those tickets!

Redeeming Vouchers
The best way to redeem your vouchers is to send an email to tickets@bayareaetc.org. In the email, state the show you would like to attend, how many vouchers you are redeeming and what the voucher numbers are. It is that easy! Please do not use the ticket phone line to redeem vouchers.

Actor Bios
Bios are due on Sunday, April 20. Bios should be emailed to neverlandnews08@yahoo.com. In the lobby of our theater, "head shot" photos of each actor will be displayed. Please type up and email a short paragraph to go along with your picture. Tell about your past theater experience, school interests, or anything else you would like to tell members of the audience about yourself. "Third person" style is the standard form (use "he or she", NOT "I or me"). Please do not include school names. Please keep length reasonable as the headshot also needs to fit on the page. If the bio is too long it will be edited or text size will be reduced.
 

Head Shots
If your actor did not take a head shot at rehearsal, please turn in a black and white 4 x 6 photo for the lobby bios. Photos should be turned into "headshot" folder at rehearsal by April 20.
 

Cast Party
Look for the cast party flyer in the folders this weekend. The cast party committee has planned a great party for the cast and families to celebrate at the closing of the show. Reservations can be made by turning in the order form to the "Cast Party" folder at rehearsal. The cast party will be held at the Canada Cafeteria at the conclusion of strike (breaking down the stage sets and cleaning up the theater & greenrooms). Families are invited to attend!
 

Notes
Now that we are in full swing of run through with the cast, the staff will begin making "notes" for the actors. The notes will be emailed along with the Neverland News. They will also be posted on the website and posted at rehearsal. Please be sure your actor reviews the notes prior to the next rehearsal. These notes will give the actors ideas of how to better play their role, be seen on stage, project their lines or songs and be their character. This is the "educational" part of the Educational Theater Company…

Peter & Tiger Lilly – More movement (so we can tell who is singing) when you sing "I’ll send for Tiger Lilly" "I’ll send for Peter Pan"

Peter – Please sing "Distant Melody" out to audience like you were singing it as a solo in a concert.

Jane and Grown Up Wendy – please run your lines together prior to coming on stage. I want you to really make those lines sound like your own words. Slow down and make meaning of each phrase. Remember these lines are your chance to help tell the audience your story.
 
Hook – in opening of Act III remember to talk to your "pirate crew" (orchestra members).
 
Lost Boys & Pirates – the lost boys (and the audience of course) may boo Hook, but the Pirates can never do that.
 
Pirates – please react bigger during Hooks speech (page 3-1-3 take a look please). Keep open to the audience.
 
All – I’m seeing a lot more solid "characters" coming to life. Don’t stop. Take it further. More, more, more…
 
Pirates – when Cecco (I think it’s Cecco who says this) says "I’ll swing before I go down there" (it’s just before he jumps into the water) more reaction. Remember he’s been your buddy.
 
All – Anyone who says the word doodle do needs to keep their diction clear. When it’s not clear it sounds like you are saying "do do" which, of course has a completely different meaning.
 
Named Lost Boys – at 3-1-10 try sneaking out of the lower poop deck. Michael be last so that Hook can catch you on Peter’s line "peter pan the avenger".
 
Michael & John – in Tender Sheppard Reprise don’t forget to take in enough breath to finish each phrase. You are starting out well, but sort of pooping out at the ends of the musical phrases.
 
All – Project, project, project.
 
Lost Boys – At the end when you sing We Won’t Grow Up reprise. Sing out to the audience as if you guys want to show us that you are the sweetest kids in the world. Really ham that up.

Nitty Gritty Day 2
Things we'll be working on this Saturday - Painting (with a capital p - Lost Boy Cave, Nursery Walls, Trees), still some construction (Slide for Lost Boys, Wendy's House, Nursery Doors, Pirate Ship/Stair railing), rigging flats for flying, disassemble the larger sets (Platforms) for transport, some "little" projects that need to get done and the building of 2 more trees. There is still a lot to get done and very little time. We need everyone to show up and lend a hand. The sets are looking amazing and if we can get more hands to help out, we can finish them and make this a great show for our actors! To add to the publicity of the show, we will be handing out balloons to children (and adults if they so wish) at the teasers. We will need to inflate about 250 total balloons. Danielle will have the balloons and helium tank in the back of the family vehicle and we are looking for volunteers to help inflate the balloons in the parking lots at both locations. Please tell Danielle if you are interested in helping out. (This can also count towards your volunteer hours!)

Missing Rehearsals – Know your role by April 12
Remember, if you miss a rehearsal, you must learn the material you missed from your counter part or someone else in the show. It is not the responsibility of the artistic staff to fill you in on what you missed. It is your responsibility to learn what you missed. At the run through this weekend, the staff will evaluate the actors. If they do not know the blocking, songs or dances, staff may choose to pull the actor from the number. Please be sure your actor is off book and knows their part!
 
Voucher & Proud Parent Deadline
Don’t forget – this weekend is the deadline to purchase Voucher packs and Proud Parent Passes! All paperwork and payments must be received by April 12. Cast Party Committee
The Cast Party committee will meet with Danielle on Saturday at 11am at Parkside. There will be a brief meeting to start planning the party!

There are a few qualifications. You must be physically able to handle the weight of the actors and you must be available to attend the fly training on April 22, 24 & 25 from 6-9pm and April 23 from 2-6pm. Nitty Gritty Day
A BIG THANK YOU to all the parents who participated in Nitty Gritty Day! We got so much accomplished! The construction crew saw lots of new faces both Saturday and Sunday and felt that many set pieces were completed and progress was made on other pieces. The costume crew “sweat shop” was busy beading those Indian costumes and cutting and sewing pirate shirts! And other parents counted and sorted backpack flyers to advertise the show through the local schools and began the process of hanging posters in store windows. As you have all been told, this show could not happen without the hard work and dedication of the volunteers. Everyone in attendance on Sunday saw the e.T.c. community hard at work and Denise took pictures to prove it. Once again, thanks for being part of the day. If you had fun, come back and play with us again. We are there every Saturday and Sunday during rehearsals!
 
Parent Interruptions & Conflicts
All conflicts should have been turned in on March 1. At this point, no additional conflicts are being accepted. Any conflict you have already requested will be documented on the sign in sheet each week. In addition, please remember that while your actor is in rehearsal, there should be no interruptions. All rehearsals are closed to parents. What is the reason for this rule? When a parent comes into the rehearsal to take their actor early, it disrupts the rehearsal process. The director, choreographer, vocal director or stage manager must stop what they are doing working on for you and your child to gather belongings, say goodbye to friends and leave. Meanwhile, the actors who were working on a scene have lost their concentration, the staff has lost both their concentration and the actors and now it takes 5 or 10 minutes to bring the masses back and start the rehearsal back up. If this happens 5 or 6 times during a rehearsal, this loses an hour. Staff and the actors are on a tight schedule and they all need every minute of the rehearsal time they have. Please be respectful of the staff and the cast and do not interrupt the rehearsal process.
 
Hair Cuts & Changes
If you actor is planning to change their hair length, color or style, please have them clear it with the director and/or Theresa the costume guru. Some costumes and/or wigs have been planned and purchased based on the hair color and/or length of the actor. So don’t change anything from now on until you have it cleared. You can do whatever you want with your hair after May 18.
 
Set Construction
There is no rehearsal this weekend but Scott will be at the warehouse working on projects. If you do not have any weekend plans, the warehouse will be open on Saturday from 11am-3pm and Sunday from 1-5pm. Stop by if you feel like working with some power tools or painting!
 
Off Book
All cast must be “off book” by Saturday March 29. “Off book” means actors will not be using their script at rehearsal. They should know their lines and not need to refer to the script. If they momentarily forget a line, Amy the Stage Manager will be there to help out. But the goal is to be off book by March 29.
 
Fly Daddy’s & Mommy’s
We are still looking for Fly Daddy’s and Mommy’s. If you looking for a way to fulfill your volunteer hours that would really get you involved in the show, this is the job for you! There are a few qualifications. You must be physically able to handle the weight of the actors and you must be available to attend the fly training on April 22, 24 & 25 from 6-9pm and April 23 from 2-6pm. Please talk to Danielle as soon as possible if you are interested.
